About Joshua Canada

My work in coaching has been primarily in the higher education and church arenas. In the local church, I have worked with several churches on DEI plans including setting the climate for the organization as well as creating goals and objectives. These have been both predominately White and multi-racial contexts. In addition, the work in the churches was indirectly connected to supporting pastoral transitions and shifts. Within higher education I have worked internally to help facilitate a diversity ambassador program which worked with faculty and staff to align the around a philosophy of DEI. Additionally, I have served on diversity committees and co-lead a process to reinstate an institutional climate study.

Joshua is passionate about and skilled at leading and coordinating strategic efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within Christian higher education contexts. I have witnessed him leverage his influence to: Partner with university leaders to collaboratively design and implement DEI initiatives that support the education and development of campus constituency, Provide leadership for Ethnic Affinity Organization to bolster the recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students of color, and Participate in university strategic planning campaigns (e.g., campus climate study, SWOT analyses, etc.) aimed at effectuating institutional change. Joshua has a heart for students, faculty, and staff. He demonstrates the emotional intelligence and intellectual acuity to engage a variety of people in a sensitive, strategic, and productive way. He has a gift for building bridges and using his influence to elevate collaboration, camaraderie, and collegiality towards a common goal.

I worked with Joshua at Westmont as colleagues in our Student Life Division and we collaborated often. He served as a co-advisor to our Black Student Union and was an invaluable resource to our students of color and those involved with Intercultural Programs. Joshua also helped co-facilitate our large racial justice workshop and often co-presented on presentations and programs at conferences and focus weeks related to issues of diversity and equity. Joshua cared deeply for our students and invested into the community as a mentor and role model for students, staff, and faculty. He's also drawn to research and thinking strategically about organizational change and leadership.
